Are your reading routines from August still holding strong or is it time for a November refresh?

These are some of the reading routines that are a part of my classroom. I’m proud to say that some of them are still as strong as the day I introduced but they’re a definitely a couple I need to revisit this quarter.

Are you a fan of reading conferences?📖✨ They

Are you a fan of reading conferences?📖✨ They used to be my least favorite component of my reading block, until I tightened up my procedures.

✨I created a conference form to make feedback and note-taking simple.

✨I made a weekly schedule by assigning two students a day which means I can meet with every kid once every 2 weeks.

✨I run my conferences during our independent reading block so I know I will always have the time.

November is Native American Heritage Month🍂 and

November is Native American Heritage Month🍂 and I’ve got a poster pack freebie to help you broaden your student’s knowledge without needing to rearrange your pacing guide to find the time.

🍁You can add the posters to a bulletin board like I did here.

or

🍁You can hang the posters in the hall and send early finishers out to do a learning walk. You can even have a post-if parking lot so that afterwards they can jot down what they learned.

Another year, another story pumpkin🎃 This year

Another year, another story pumpkin🎃 This year I went with Would Would Win: Lions vs. Tigers. My class mascot is the lions this year and my partner teacher’s homeroom is the Tigers, so it worked out perfectly!

Doodle Jamz have been the coolest part of my class

Doodle Jamz have been the coolest part of my classroom lately and have absolutely saved my insanity during our indoor recesses thanks to hurricane rain!

I have the jelly bigs and so far I’ve used them in 3 main ways with my students.👇🏽

⭐️Inferring Character Feelings:
We stop at the beginning, middle, and end of our read alouds to infer how the main character feels, using the illustrated emoji word bank I created. The @doodlejamzhq have been working like white boards. I have the students draw the emoji aligned with the feeling they selected.

⭐️Agree or Disagree activity:
I typically have one side of my room labeled as “agree” and the other as “disagree”. During review, I’ll state something like- “the setting is who is telling the story” and the students will move to the agree or disagree side of the room. We’ve been using Doodle Jamz for this recently and it’s made the activity much quicker.

We also play this activity during morning meeting with silly statements like, “Bigfoot exists”.

⭐️Indoor Recess & Calm Corner:
Today I had a teacher tell me that my students were the quietest she’s ever heard a class during indoor recess. It’s because more than half of my kiddos chose to play with the Doodle Jamz. They love moving the jelly around under the plastic.

My classroom library is officially open!🎉 Every

My classroom library is officially open!🎉 Every year my students have to earn the opening of our class library by participating in my library/reader lessons and then returning books from our browsing bins correctly.

Having students read every day is important for me so from day one I have bins on the tables with an assortment of books from my classroom library.

Students can read from the bins the first week to become familiar with what’s available in our library.

After a library tour, book care lessons, and explaining the organization of our library- students work together to return all the books from the browsing bins.

My coteacher and I observe and support when needed and when they are successful, I cut the tape and the library is open!

Then, it’s book box filling time!💕📚✨

I kicked the week off by giving my students worry

I kicked the week off by giving my students worry stones! I read Alma and the Worry Stone by @teacherintulle and then surprised my students with their own worry stone.

I picked up the “stones” at the Dollar Tree, but I might have told my students that I stole them from a dragons’s lair.

The students were so excited to choose their stone. We discussed how their stone is a secret just between me and them, that other teachers can’t know. I’m hoping this will cut down on any playing with the stone like a toy in other teacher’s classes.

We also talked about how we can use the stone or other strategies when we’re worried. Before the day ended, my kiddos stored their stone in their book box so they would know exactly where to find it tomorrow!

This week I taught how readers have great traits, the difference between real and fake reading, that readers have stamina, readers choose good fit books, and how readers take care of their books.

Next week I’ll keep going with my building readers lessons to teach my students how to

⭐️talk about their reading
⭐️write about their reading
⭐️conference about their reading

The first day of 24-25 is in the books!✨I read aloud Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao and then we completed a page from our reading response journals together.

Such a simple but solid lesson, and a great start to our read aloud routine.💕

I always have 3 options for morning work in the first week: coloring, class name word search, or reading. I’m happily surprised when I see students choose reading.

I make these book browsing bins every year to showcase what our classroom library has to offer so that students have an idea of what’s available before the grand opening of our library after we complete all the library lessons.
