April is National Poetry Month, hit the bookmark button to save this post for next week! I am so excited to use the 30 days of poetry PPT and journal that I created last year, my students loved it!💕😊

Every day I introduce a different poem type, poem tool, or children’s poet. Then, we follow up the slide with the correlating journal page to respond in some sort of creative way. I can’t wait to see their finished poetry portfolios at the end of April.

During my IG hiatus, I didn’t share any of my front boards. This one was from the Literary Nonfiction unit (Narrative Nonfiction) and the week I taught inferring character feelings and traits.✨

My students LOVED these games and they took almost

My students LOVED these games and they took almost no time to prep. I threw them together the day before (or after my students already got to school and were eating breakfast).

These were whole group lessons so I had the kids move down to the carpet when I introduced the questions and then back to tables to discuss and write their answer on the white board with their team. The movement kept them focused.

Everyday my students would ask what the reward was and I told them it was doing a good job and being able to line up first. I do a lot of rewards for different things but for this I kept it simple.

On St. Patrick’s Day, I happened upon a printed cauldron of gold and chocolate coins in the teacher lounge and immediately got the idea for Gold Rush, so I borrowed a few.🤫

The skills and questions we used with these games were hard but the fun competition really helped the students not to focus on rigor, and just to discuss with their teams and do their best.

Test prep can be boring, so every year I try to ma

Test prep can be boring, so every year I try to make the switch up in routine fun and engaging for my students.

We are about to enter our 3rd week of prep and they are doing so well at meeting the expectations we set, working toward their own goals, and growing with comprehension.

They love earning stickers and so many of our test prep activities are turned into games (or even made more fun by just adding multicolored highlighters).

Every Friday, I randomly select five students and if they have all their stickers from the week, they get prize box.

My team created a 40 day prep plan (which is kind of elaborate) but focuses on emphasizing what they need as both readers and testers.

Here’s what I love about this timeline:

💗It’s in the hallway so all students in the building will stop and read, not just my students (my room is by the library, gym, recess door, and boy’s bathroom so I get a lot of foot traffic).

💗It’s an easy way to introduce students to influential people that they probably have not met.

💗It takes no time from my curriculum or pacing.

💗We are departmentalized with a 3 way switch, so one of our classes is always lined up along this wall during transitions, having something for them to look at/do while they wait keeps them quieter.

💗I have a digital version of these cards and we discuss a person a day during morning meeting. We are only a few days into March and I already have students excited to share facts they read and remembered about our person of the day from the hallway timeline.

Biography vs. Autobiography & Literary Nonfiction Anchor Chart✨

I created the Venn Diagram with my first group of readers, which I thought was a great way to start the lesson. Then, I forgot to erase when the second group came in so I ended up asking them to “study the board and explain what it shows” and I was surprised that it was a much more challenging warm up but SO beneficial that I did it with my 3rd group as well.

Today our Black History bio cards transitioned fro

Today our Black History bio cards transitioned from necklaces (which I used to introduce them yesterday) into a timeline.

I loved seeing all the interested students flipping the cards on their way into the building this morning, although more than one student was upset that I’ve lost my Michael Jackson bio card even though the timeline piece was up. 🤣Guess I’ll have to print another.
